Introducing Dr DOF for the iPhone ®

Dr DOF is the first of many 'in your pocket' photo widgets from Phozmo.com designed to help you with your photography where and when you need it. Dr DOF is a unique utility that provides not only multiple ways to help you determine, and yes, even control the Depth of Field (DOF)in your images, but it also provides you with the underlying information necessary to master the concepts behind this most useful of photo techniques. It is both a handy DOF calculator that can be used just as easily in the field, or in the studio, as well as an instructional aid that will build your photographic knowledge and shooting confidence.

Getting started

You can get straight into calculating the amount of sharpness in your photos using the Quick Calculator in our Fast Track mode. Alternatively you can visually select the look that you want from our macro, portrait or landscape photos in the DOF Examples section, and then duplicate the results using our camera settings as a basis for capturing your own images. Getting serious

If you already know the basics then head on over to the DOF Expert screen, where you can take direct control over the key characteristics that affect the zone of sharpness in your photos. Here you can work in two distinct modes: Settings to DOF - where you input the camera settings and Dr DOF provides you with the predicted zone of sharpness for your subject or DOF to Settings - designed so that you can input the near and far limits of sharpness and the utility calculates the camera settings you need to use to achieve this DOF. 'But what about obtaining a Hyperfocal Distance setting for a given camera setup?' I hear you say. No problems! Well Dr DOF has that covered too. Input your lens and aperture, hit the Use HFD button and the utility automatically calculates both the near limit and subject focusing distance for you.

Customized for your equipment

Dr DOF was built with your camera gear in mind. To get you started quickly the utility uses generic camera and lens details, but once you become more familiar with Dr DOF you can input the characteristics of your own camera and lens equipment right into our unique Camera Bag database. From that point on the utility uses your equipment directly in both the DOF Expert and Quick Calculator screens.
